The Eternal by Bobby Asghar     THE ETERNAL

Decadence:

  • Deterioration, especially of morality or culture; decay; degeneration.
  • The state reached through such a process.
  • Living in a tip with something ungodly growing in the kitchen sink; smoking more than a fifteen-year-old Cypriot; drinking like prohibition is about to hit; waking up hungover, pickled as an onion, next to a total stranger, and lacking memory, conscience, or both.

But it’s not like Sam had much of a choice.

So long as there are demons, so will there be eternals. Supernatural beings with supernatural powers, they are the Bringers of Light. The heroes of mythology and lore.

Sam is one such eternal. He is also an empath. He will neither age nor wither so long as there are demons enough to sustain him. His is not to serve humanity. Nor to champion them. It’s nothing personal—just a matter of equilibrium.

The Christmas Canal Killings were his lure to the north. "A Shocking Chiller for a Stocking Filler", the newspapers  called it. Trapped beneath dull, grey skies ever since, and not just in the physical sense, he has never been further from himself. But he has never been closer to humanity, either.
